Drivers of Disparity

Black women have an increased risk of maternal mortality, and that risk is independent of age, parity, or education. Increased socioeconomic status has been shown to have positive effects on health, yet black women have worse birth outcomes at every rung of the socioeconomic ladder (Dominguez, 2008).  Individual risk factors do not explain the persistent differences. The following sections will provide insight into this disturbing trend.
