America is failing its Black mothers. Here I have collected the stories of several women and their experiences as Black women and mothers in the US healthcare system. Many thanks to Kara, Sherria, Kim, and Shawn for their courage in sharing their stories with me.
Although the interview questions and format differed slightly, these were the general guidelines I followed.
- First I would just love to hear about your pregnancy experiences, and being a Black women and mother in the US
- How did you prepare?
- How did you feel supported?
- Were there any scary moments?
- Did you learn anything from your first pregnancy and birth experience that helped you with your second?
- Did you ever feel your race was a factor in your pregnancy?
- What are some things white or non-Black providers can do to make you feel safe and well cared for?
- If you could tell future mothers one thing, what would it be?
